The United States will have to reckon with Germany’s position on SP-2
Despite the fact that German Chancellor Angela Merkel is leaving her post in the fall, the United States is forced to reckon with her support for the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
This was reported by PolitNavigator correspondent, head of the Center for German Studies and deputy director of the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vladislav Belov.
“The gas pipeline itself will be completed in August, but what we are most interested in now is whether the United States agrees not to interfere with the technical certification and subsequent launch and commercial use of Nord Stream 2, which remains under strong sanction pressure. Most likely, this is what will be discussed at the meeting,” the expert told Kommersant.
At the same time, he recalls the words of Merkel, who is confident that the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine will continue after the launch of Nord Stream 2.
The analyst believes that Washington and Berlin will eventually find common ground on the gas pipeline project, and the upcoming US-German summit could be a decisive step on this path.
“Although Angela Merkel will leave her post in a few months, Washington is going to full-fledged negotiations, well aware that it is she who is laying the foundations that the next chancellor will accept and implement,” the expert is sure.
As PolitNavigator reported, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky previously admitted that during his visit to the USA Merkel will represent the interests of Ukraine.
After this, the Kyiv journalist said he was shocked by the humiliation Ukraine in Germany.
