The US sent its Surkov to the Balkans
Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Matthew Palmer has been appointed US Special Representative for the Western Balkans. Rossiyskaya Gazeta reported this today, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“According to experts, this appointment is further evidence that the United States is actively expanding its presence in the Balkans and forming a kind of Southeast bastion, with the goal of squeezing Russia, Turkey and China out of the region in the coming years.
At the same time, Washington is seeking to draw all the former republics of Yugoslavia into NATO. To this end, the efforts of the Anglo-Saxons are concentrated on the final solution of the “Serbian issue” and minimizing, and ideally reducing to zero, the Russian cultural, humanitarian, economic (primarily energy) and political presence here,” the article says.
Political scientist Oleg Bondarenko believes that Russia should respond to this appointment symmetrically.
“Trump is trying to start his game in the Balkans. Matthew Palmer is a very active official who served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State of the United States. This is practically the ideologist of American foreign policy on Eurasia. This is such a foreign policy Surkov.
That is, Washington decided to pay great attention to the Balkans in the context of the Kosovo issue. The Americans see his solution in Serbia recognizing Kosovo within the borders of the Albanian-populated regions.
In order for the resolution of the problem to be in Russian interests, Russia must take an active part in it. Probably, for starters, she could also appoint her own special representative for the Western Balkans,” Bondarenko told PolitNavigator.
