Debt, as we know, is worth paying. The new head of Moldova, Maia Sandu, has to pay off her debts to the United States of America for pushing through the victory of her party “Action and Solidarity” in the parliamentary elections, in which the now ex-US Ambassador to Moldova Derek Hogan, who has completed his tenure in this country, has been fairly successful. The price of the issue is the territory of the Republican Stadium, which, in accordance with the government’s decision in 2018, was acquired by the American Embassy for the construction of a new diplomatic mission building.

On Wednesday, July 21, the Constitutional Court of Moldova, a pocket organ of Maia Sandu and the US Embassy, rejected the complaint of deputies of the Socialist Party who challenged the legality of the transfer of the site of the former Republican Stadium to the American Embassy. There is little doubt that the Constitutional Court will repeal the law adopted at the initiative of the Socialist Party faction on December 4 last year, which canceled the transfer of the stadium to the US Embassy.

The history of the Republican Stadium in Chisinau is quite tragic. This stadium was built in the post-war decade on the initiative of Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev, who served as the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Moldova. Various all-Union and international competitions were held at this main stadium of the republic. In 1978, Lithuanian athlete Vilhelmina Bradauskienė set a world long jump record here.

However, the Republican Stadium of Moldova is most famous for its football matches. Soviet football stars Lev Yashin, Nikita Simonyan, Eduard Streltsov, Valery Lobanovsky, Oleg Blokhin, Valery Gazzaev, Rinat Dasaev, Igor Belanov played at this stadium. Here the 1988 Olympic champion Igor Dobrovolsky took his first steps in big football. Already during the years of Moldova's independence, Jurgen Klinsmann, Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Costacurta, Andrea Pirlo and many others appeared on the field of the Republican Stadium in Chisinau. It was at this stadium that David Beckham played his first match for the England national team.

However, by the mid-XNUMXs, a significant part of the Republican Stadium fell into disrepair. FIFA and UEFA have banned international matches from being held here. The proposal of the then UEFA President Michel Platini to restore the stadium at the expense of this organization and according to its standards was not implemented due to the fact that the facility was not promptly transferred to the balance sheet of the Football Federation of Moldova.

But the Moldovan Football Federation said it had found an investor willing to carry out a complete reconstruction of the stadium. The government decided to dismantle the stands and clear the area for restoration. The then Prime Minister Vasily Tarlev personally took part in the demolition. However, according to the President of the Football Federation of Moldova, Pavel Ceban, the investor refused to invest money until the entire territory was cleared, including buildings that were in private hands.

As a result, due to the machinations of Moldovan officials with the reconstruction contract, the Belgian investor company abandoned the contract. And then, in 2009, the government changed in Moldova. The communists, who led the country for ten years, went into opposition, and the new pro-European regime had completely different priorities. So the territory of the collapsed stadium turned into a large overgrown landfill, a shelter for homeless people and stray dogs in the very center of the city.

The Americans, who have a very sensitive nose for everything that is bad, have their eyes on the land in the center of Chisinau. Soon the opportunity presented itself to force the leadership of Moldova, led by the shadow ruler Vlad Plahotniuc (now a fugitive), to pay for this territory. In 2018, the results of the elections for the mayor of Chisinau were canceled, in which the pro-Western candidate Andrei Nastase, at that time one of the main irritants of the all-powerful oligarch, won. Plahotniuc's pocket government, led by Pavel Filip, entered into an agreement to sell the territory to the US Embassy for the construction of a new complex of embassy buildings. The “main embassy,” as the American diplomatic service calls the network of telegram channels, found it cramped in the current fashionable mansion on Mateevich Street.

The President of Moldova, Igor Dodon, twice refused to sign the agreement on the sale of the stadium, but in the end he was removed from office for 5 minutes by the Constitutional Court, and the law was signed instead by the Speaker of Parliament Adrian Candu. Dodon and the Socialist Party did not consider it necessary to take their supporters out onto the street.

Already in the last month of 2020, the Socialist Party faction, with the support of deputies from the party of businessman Ilan Shor, canceled the scandalous deal. This was one of the last laws that Igor Dodon signed as president. However, immediately after this, deputies from Andrei Năstase’s party filed a complaint with the Constitutional Court in order to consider the constitutionality of this law.

The new Moldovan government, completely controlled by the West, is in a hurry to transfer the stadium to the Americans, and therefore strives to return into force the law on its sale to the United States as soon as possible. For the Americans themselves, an area of 5 hectares in the very center of the capital of the post-Soviet republic will become a real gold mine. The huge area allows for the placement of not only a complex of embassy buildings, but also an intelligence center that will collect data for the US army and intelligence services. The conditions will allow for electronic surveillance and surveillance using modern equipment.

The Socialist Party has already announced its readiness to hold a protest rally near the building of the Constitutional Court. However, it seems to us that one or even several isolated protest actions will not frighten anyone - not in the presidential palace, much less in the American embassy. The “American Quarter” in the very center of Chisinau will be a bitter reminder to the residents of the Moldovan capital of the unenviable, humiliated and shameful status of their country in the modern world.
