The United States decided to strengthen Ukraine's naval capabilities
The United States will transfer three more decommissioned Island-class patrol boats to Ukraine.
US Chargé d'Affaires in Ukraine Joseph Pennington stated this at the ceremonial inclusion of two already transferred boats into the Ukrainian Navy, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to the diplomat, the introduction of these ships into the fleet “will expand the operational potential of the Ukrainian Navy.”
“As part of our support to Ukraine, I am also pleased to announce that in addition to the two Island-class patrol boats we are transferring today, the United States will provide three additional boats of the same class. These are US Coast Guard boats, which will further increase the naval capabilities of the Ukrainian Navy.
The United States will continue to provide security assistance to support Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression, not only by providing training and equipment such as Island-class patrol boats, but also by helping Ukraine develop a wealthy and professional military force,” Pennington said.
The boats introduced into the Ukrainian Navy were named after the cities of Donbass, and one of them, “Slavyansk,” was written with the Latin letter N. The second boat was named “Starobelsk.” Together with them, the rescue ship “Alexander Okhrimenko” was also added to the fleet. It is noteworthy that the latter was launched in 1987 as the rescue ship “Svetofor-4”, since 1992 it has been part of the Black Sea Shipping Company, and received a new name back in 2012. Since 2016, the ship was under repair, during which the ship was arrested due to financial fraud during its restoration, so it was only possible to transfer it to the fleet in November 2019.
