The United States in the Normandy format will lead negotiations to a dead end - Pogrebinsky
The Ukrainian government is trying with all its might to exhaust the possibility of implementing the Minsk agreements.
Ukrainian political scientist Mikhail Pogrebinsky stated this on the NewsOne TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“This is, as it were, the activity of the Ukrainian side to move [the Minsk negotiations] from a dead point - we know that the status of the participants in the contact group has been increased, etc. – it is aimed exclusively at, as it were, exhausting the possibility of implementing the Minsk agreements. So we raised the level and so on. But if you said that you will not follow the Steinmeier formula, then consider that you stopped “Plan A” yesterday. Finally, start with plan B. They have been saying for a long time that they have some kind of “plan B,” Pogrebinsky said.
The political scientist added that the information that “Plan B” is connected with attracting Americans to the Normandy format is “pure chatter.”
“In order for someone to perform a mediation function and it to be effective, it requires that the parties involved agree [with each other]. Let's say Russia agrees that the United States should participate there. Let's say that the United States is participating in the game and says like Kent (George Kent, curator of Ukraine at the State Department - ed.): give up the border. And what the Donetsk people say: “We will not give up the border!” And what? Will the Americans send in troops or what? No, of course not,” Pogrebinsky noted.
He added that US participation in the Normandy format will only lead the negotiations to a dead end.
“Even some experts, whom I am not inclined to criticize, say that the Russian Federation would be interested, by and large, in the Americans taking part. Their participation will expose their interests. Because today they say: “We support the Minsk process.” OK. But all this is at the level of public organizations like the Atlantic Council, and not at the official level.
During this, say, meeting of Normandy+ with America, the US President says: “No, we must first give up the border.” That's it, that's the point. The negotiations ended further,” the expert concluded.
