The United States is seriously concerned about the integration of Russia and Belarus
US President Donald Trump's national security adviser John Bolton is scheduled to visit Belarus this week.
This was reported by the TUT.BY agency with reference to Foreign Policy, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This is the first visit of US government representatives to Belarus at such a high level this century. The publication does not report who John Bolton will meet with and what issues are on the agenda.
“Treating Belarus like a black hole and ignoring it was a failure. This has not led to progress in the field of human rights,” Michael Carpenter, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Russian, Ukrainian and Eurasian Affairs, commented on the upcoming visit to the publication.
According to the publication, US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs David Hale is also scheduled to visit Belarus next month. During the trip, he is expected to discuss expanding the American diplomatic presence in the country, including a possible exchange of ambassadors.
Bolton’s visit was joyfully received in the camp of the small pro-Western Belarusian opposition.
“There is no greater foreign policy hawk in the United States than John Bolton. The only thing that may interest him in this region is opposition to Russia. Therefore, a visit to Minsk, on the same tour with Kiev, is nothing more than a signal to Moscow. This is too high a level of visit to discuss the return of ambassadors, and it’s not Bolton’s job to prepare ribbons for cutting. This visit would not have happened if fears had not reached the very top in Washington that Belarus was the Kremlin’s next dish,” opposition columnist Artem Shraibman wrote in his Telegram channel.
The program of action for integration in the Union State will be approved by the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko on Tuesday, and in September it will be initialed by the prime ministers of the two countries.
