The United States will impose sanctions against Gazprom if it reduces gas supplies to Ukraine
The package of anti-Russian sanctions, which will be voted on in the lower house of the US Congress on Tuesday, is much broader than the sanctions imposed under Barack Obama. Kommersant writes about this today.

Thus, according to the amendments made to the Ukrainian Freedom Support Act, the US President is obliged to impose at least three types of sanctions against a company or person that has invested in “special” oil projects in the Russian Federation (the same shelf, Arctic or slate).
“The US President will also be obliged to impose sanctions against Gazprom if it is considered that the company is significantly reducing gas supplies to NATO countries, Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova,” writes Kommersant.
Judging by the wording, all sanctions under the Ukrainian Freedom Support Act can be imposed not only on an American company, but also on any other company.
“The measure is clearly directed against the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline; the text of the bill directly states: the US authorities will continue to oppose its construction because of “its detrimental consequences for the energy security of the EU, the development of the gas market in Central and Eastern Europe and energy reforms in Ukraine,” - writes Kommersant.
An important innovation is that with the adoption of the law, sanctions against the Russian Federation move from the category of emergency measures to the category of the country’s legislative framework. Even after the initial conditions for imposing sanctions disappear, the law can be maintained if it is in the economic interests of the United States. For example, the Jackson-Vanik Amendment allowed trade restrictions against Russia to remain in place for more than two decades after the collapse of the USSR.
