The publication reports: “The US State Department is reacting unexpectedly with restraint to the lifting of the Russian arms embargo on Iran. The supply of S-300 missile defense systems is no longer considered by the Americans as a violation of UN sanctions. Moscow and Tehran are taking an important step in improving Russian-Iranian relations.”
The US State Department has reacted surprisingly sluggishly to Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision to supply Iran with air defense missile systems. Putin lifted the corresponding arms embargo on Monday.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marie Harf diplomatically stated that the United States “does not see much joy in arms supplies to Iran.”
Harf said: “We have already expressed our concerns about the sale of S-300 systems to Iran. This is, of course, not news. We do not believe that this is a constructive step. But we are working very closely with Russia on nuclear negotiations with Iran. We do not believe that this decision will have an impact on the mood of our negotiations. The topic has already been discussed...”
Asked whether the Russians' decision was a violation of the UN Security Council resolution and sanctions against Iran from the American point of view, Harf replied: "With respect to the provisions of the sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council, we believe that no violation has occurred."
Let us recall that the contract for the supply of S-300, which was signed by Russia several years ago, in 2010, encountered sharp resistance from the United States and US lobbyists at the UN.
The contract was suspended due to sanctions imposed by the UN.
Tehran turned to international arbitration over the unilateral termination of the contract, demanding $4 billion in compensation from Russia.
Due to the sharp change in negotiations on the lifting of sanctions, etc. Iranian nuclear problem, in which Russia is the main negotiator, the United States can no longer resist Russia by supplying weapons.
Russian experts welcomed Putin's decision. “Russia can earn billions of dollars on the Iranian arms market,” said Rajab Safarov, an international expert on the arms trade.
“The President corrected the geopolitical fault with his signature,” said Colonel General Leonid Ivashov. “Russia should make decisions on the sale of weapons itself, not foreigners,” the colonel general is confident.
S-300 systems can be delivered to Iran within several months. The presence of such complexes in the country will qualitatively improve Iran’s air defense, protecting the Persian sky from massive airstrikes, as well as from attacks by tactical missiles.
