Moscow - Kyiv, November 4 (PolitNavigator, Mikhail Stamm) - The United States refuses to recognize the elections in the DPR and LPR and persistently urges Russia not to do this, otherwise it will have to pay for it. Similar statements on this topic were made in Washington by State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki and US National Security Council representative Bernadette Meehan.

“If Russia recognizes the so-called elections, this will only serve to further isolate it,” Psaki said, without specifying what specific response the United States is preparing in this case.

“The United States does not recognize leaders elected in illegal elections,” Psaki quotes RBC with reference to Associated Press. She added that Washington will continue to cooperate with the central government of Ukraine in Kyiv.

The official representative of the State Department also welcomed the statements of the leaders of the EU countries, who also refused to recognize the results of the elections in the DPR and LPR.

New sanctions may be introduced against Russia if Moscow “continues to ignore the Minsk agreements,” reports Reuters November 4. This statement was made by White House Security Council representative Bernadette Meehan. “We have repeatedly mentioned that Russia has a choice. If it supports the peace process and respects the agreements reached in Minsk, the cost of Russia's actions against Ukraine will decrease. If Moscow ignores its obligations and continues its dangerous actions, the cost to Russia will rise,” Ms Meehan said. She expressed concern about the statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry about its readiness to recognize the elections in Donbass. According to her, if this happens and Moscow ignores the Minsk agreements, then new “economic punishments” await it.
