The United States has looked into the abyss. And this is far from the end
The latest events in the United States, where protesters who disagreed with the results of the presidential election stormed the Capitol, are fraught with extremely dangerous and unpredictable consequences for the country.
According to a PolitNavigator correspondent, Igor Zevelev, an expert at the Washington Kennan Institute, writes in Kommersant about this.
“Desperate protests of Trumpists, escalated into a riot and storming of the Capitol, led to the consolidation of the American ruling class. Irreconcilable political opponents - Democrats and Republicans, looking into the abyss, were horrified, retreated and closed ranks. The adjourned meeting of Congress resumed just a few hours later, and the Electoral College vote was certified.
According to him, it is “deeply misleading” to think that “Trump and Trumpism have been completely discredited, the country is returning to normality and integrity, as Joe Biden promised.”
The expert draws attention to the fact that a significant part of American society is now completely left without representation in political institutions; its voice, which has not been heard for a long time in the leading media, has been blocked in the most popular social networks.
He also believes that by declaring the rioters terrorists and refusing to engage in dialogue with them, politicians are making a serious mistake.
“The social and political marginalization of the poorly educated part of the white population of the American heartland, accelerated by recent events in Washington, can have very unpleasant consequences for the entire society. The radicalization of the “non-systemic opposition” is possible. Surveillance of potential “domestic terrorists” will inevitably affect peaceful citizens as well. A much more dangerous demagogue than Trump may appear who will try to drag along all the dissatisfied,” the political scientist writes.
He adds that these developments are especially worrying given the extreme polarization of opinions on almost all issues.
“The Capitol building has always been a symbol of America as the biblical “city on a hill.” This is not to say that its radiance has now dimmed. The political system has undoubtedly passed the test. However, at the beginning of the new decade, cracks in the social foundation became abundantly clear. If they go deeper, the building will shake. And an abyss may open under it,” Zevelev sums up.
