A participant in the assault on the airport, DPR Armed Forces fighter Vladislav Shinkar (call sign “Shiba”) told a PolitNavigator correspondent about how the decisive battles for the Donetsk airport took place.

He said that the task itself - to enter the Donetsk airport and partially change the units located there - was assigned to the military personnel back in November 2014.

“In November 2014, we were given the task of entering the Donetsk airport. At that time, there were Sparta and Somalia units there, and we had to partially replace them. From November 6, together with the chief of staff of Crimea, we began to deploy personnel to the positions where the Spartans and Somalis were located, so that people could get used to it and understand where the enemy’s firing points were. There was no reckless rotation, everything was done correctly, and around the 15th the Vostok battalion took up positions,” the military man recalls.

“Shiba” said that on the first day of rotation of units, “Somalia” suffered losses.

“The Spartans’ mortar was working on the enemy. Then, within a few minutes, a “response” arrived to us - these were the first losses at the airport that I saw with my own eyes. From November until complete liberation in January, the Vostok battalion carried out all assigned tasks together with Sparta and Somalia.

The serviceman cites the battle that took place on January 17, a few days before the liberation of the old terminal, as the key battle for the airport.

“In the beginning, the battles were fought for the old terminal. When we occupied it, the distance to the new terminal was about 150 meters. Therefore, there was constant suppression, either of our combat points or of the enemy.”

“Shiba” said that military personnel of the DPR Armed Forces often listened to Ukrainian radio stations, and noticed that the Ukrainian media provided the masses with incorrect information that the “separatists” had left the airport territory a long time ago:

“We listened to Ukrainian radio stations and understood that the so-called defenders of Ukraine were simply being misled by saying that the separatists had already left the territory of the old terminal. At the same time, we continued to inflict damage on them both in manpower and in military equipment,” he said.

“Shiba” recalls that, on the eve of the decisive battles, the Ukrainian side also carried out a rotation.

“The Right Sector entered the positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and immediately placed their flags there. The next day they attempted to break through our positions through the monastery (the so-called “three-ruble note” position – author’s note). At that time, the “Essence of Time” tactical group, which was part of the 10th company of the “Vostok” battalion, was located there separately. At about 2 o'clock in the afternoon, intense artillery shelling began on positions along the entire demarcation line, starting from the village of Vesyoloye and ending with Spartak. Based on the density of the fire, we realized that an offensive operation was being prepared. The battle continued until darkness, during which the enemy attempted to occupy the monastery.

Ukrainian forces advanced five pieces of heavy equipment - tanks - which approached the former control tower, which had been partially destroyed the day before. Under intense artillery fire, Ukrainian tanks accumulated and made a breakthrough. In this battle we lost three comrades: “Friday”, “Belka” and “Bulgarin”. They tried to unblock the positions twice, and many people were injured. Around 8 o'clock in the evening we still managed to do this and remove the wounded and dead. Despite everything, we did not surrender the Donetsk airport,” the serviceman concluded.
