The publication writes that a Russian who collaborated with the Islamic State terrorist organization banned in the Russian Federation and was detained after returning from Syria spoke about the preparation of the terrorist attack. According to Kommersant’s interlocutor, this man occupied the lowest level in the militant hierarchy, so he knew some of the members of the sabotage group sent to Russia, and he only maintained telephone contact with his contactees.
“Having thus determined the mobile numbers of the alleged terrorists and punched them, the operatives found out that all the SIM cards were purchased in the markets and were not tied to real people, so they were forced to limit themselves to wiretapping the militants’ conversations, hoping to eventually find them themselves or at least find out the details their plans.
However, the intelligence services did not have time to reveal the entire network - experienced IS emissaries rarely resorted to the help of mobile phones, and all their conversations were limited to short phrases that did not specify the names, times and places of meetings. After an explosion occurred in the metro, the operational game had to be urgently interrupted, but the development carried out still yielded results - having identified telephone numbers that were somehow involved among network participants, the intelligence services blocked them, immediately depriving the entire underground of communications. The second performer, left without contact, apparently panicked and, refusing to carry out his plan, simply left the bag with the bomb under the bench,” the newspaper reports the story of its source, clarifying, however, that for now this is only preliminary, not officially confirmed data.
