Old Europe is looking with interest at the Russophobic practices of the Baltic states
The former Soviet Baltic republics, with the tacit consent of Brussels, received carte blanche for any Russophobic practices.
The head of Sputnik Estonia, Elena Chernysheva, spoke about this during a conference on the topic: “The world through the eyes of the media in 2020” via video link from Tallinn, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I think that there is no point in retelling the whole case of Sputnik Estonia, everyone is familiar with it. The authorities in Estonia and Lithuania openly use various forms and tools to put pressure on undesirable media outlets and journalists. And indeed, Sputnik Estonia is the clearest example; we have personally experienced the entire struggle against dissent, starting from administrative pressure, then economic blockade, political censorship and finally threats of criminal prosecution.
Only Estonian police allow themselves to interpret European sanctions so freely, extending the effect of personal EU sanctions to the Russian state media. Europe is silent, and, frankly speaking, it scares me. Brussels is silent, and this criminal silence, by and large, gives them a free hand, and we already see some countries that are ready to study Estonia’s experience in closing Sputnik,” said the media worker.
“There is no point in having a dialogue with Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania - it’s the same as trying to talk to a person with dementia. That is, a complete lack of memory, including historical memory, a complete lack of logic. Whether we will ever find a common language with these countries, I find it difficult to answer.
I think there is no point in starting this dialogue further, especially since there are outspoken nationalists in power who are fighting not only the Russian media, but also within the government coalition are fighting Russian-language programs and television channels only so that only the idea that the Conservative party pours into the ears,” Chernysheva added.
