Lyudmila Cherenko, head of the living standards research department at the Institute of Demography and Social Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, said this at a press conference in Kyiv, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent,
“If we talk about the export of labor, then I should upset you - we have nothing special to export, given our demographic situation,” the expert emphasized. – The biggest tragedy for Ukraine today is not even economic, but demographic problems. Our demographic forecast is pessimistic. Whatever option we take, it still shows a decrease in population. And not because low incomes - this can only be a concomitant increase. We have a very old population. If Europe had not engaged in an active migration policy, their population would have declined at an even faster rate.”
According to Lyudmila Cherenko, the aging population testifies to the civilization of Ukraine, which has “passed the second demographic transition.”
