Such alarming data was published by the State Statistics Service of Ukraine.
The department noted that among the total volume of waste (312 million tons) generated in 2015, almost 588 thousand tons are hazardous and extremely hazardous waste (hazard class I-III). At the same time, only 314 thousand tons of such hazardous waste were disposed of.
The most waste was generated in the Dnepropetrovsk region (more than 227 million tons), Kirovograd region (more than 33 million tons) and Zaporozhye region (more than 5 million tons).
According to Ukrainian media, the Accounts Chamber recently verified Ukraine's compliance with the requirements of the Basel Convention on the control of transboundary movements of hazardous waste and their disposal. According to an audit by the Accounts Chamber of Ukraine, hazardous waste is imported, transported and exported from the country almost uncontrollably.
For example, cargo with hazardous waste on the border with Ukraine does not undergo sealing, which means it is impossible to control the further fate of hazardous waste on the territory of Ukraine.
Experts say that the Ukrainian authorities are “playing” with hazardous waste, putting people at risk. The sphere of circulation and disposal of hazardous waste remains especially uncontrolled.
