Bet on chatter: Kiev savors “joint patrols” of Donbass and “elections according to Ukrainian rules”
Ukraine, instead of implementing the approved agreements on Donbass, voiced a new idea - introducing joint patrols with the LDPR on the border with Russia.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Vadim Prystaiko, made the corresponding theses on the ICTV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“On the Ukrainian side, the Ukrainian border should be controlled by Ukrainian border guards. This is the principled position we must achieve. This is the ideal option, which the government, the president, and everyone else are working on. How will we get to this - this non-ideal path to this ideal option - this is perhaps the one that was proposed in the first “Minsk” back in 2014, when it was written that along the Ukrainian-Russian official border a security corridor under OSCE control.
Unfortunately, the majority have forgotten that such an agreement has been reached, and in this context, the development of our negotiations is not moving forward. More is said about the need to provide some forces, for example, peacekeepers, or create, as was agreed back in Minsk, certain, as they called, joint patrols throughout the entire uncontrolled zone, which would consist of the National Police of Ukraine, representatives of the OSCE and communities that now live in that place.
How to form three sides, to what extent this is a viable structure, is being discussed right now,” Prystaiko said.
The minister also added that Ukraine does not exclude the possibility of re-election of local officials of the LDPR under Ukrainian legislation:
“We would like to prevent the legalization of anyone who is on that side of the contact line. That is why a democratic model was proposed - holding local elections in order to elect at least the minimum, at the lowest level, local authorities.
We are not talking about the deputies who will take seats in the Verkhovna Rada - no. We want to legalize those people who are elected at the local level...
I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the people are the same ones who are now de facto in charge; we understand this not to be naive. But this is the path of a democratic state that we have chosen,” the official said.
