According to the publication, after long consultations with the leaders of the Republican Party, Trump decided to ask Congress to finance the construction of the border wall from the American budget. This could happen as early as April.
Louisiana Republican Congressman Steve Scalise said Thursday: “We want President Trump to have all the tools he needs to build the wall.”
Trump's team is appealing to a law passed in 2006 during the administration of President George W. Bush that provided for the construction of a protective wall on the border with Mexico. Its length was supposed to be 700 miles. Then this project was not implemented due to lack of necessary funds.
Entering the election race, Donald Trump repeatedly promised to build a wall between Mexico and the United States. It was assumed that Mexico would finance the construction. However, earlier the Mexican president made it clear that Mexico City was not interested in financing the project.
Indiana Republican Congressman Luke Messer said Thursday: “It's a lot of money, but it's a matter of priorities.” He noted that according to estimates last year, construction could cost about $10 billion.
“Democrats may be in an advantageous position to block the government to stop the construction of a wall or a barrier or a fence,” Messer added.
