Stoltenberg assures that NATO does not pose a threat to Russia
NATO is seeking to improve relations with Russia.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated this on the air of the liberal Russian radio station Ekho Moskvy, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I am ready to cooperate and negotiate with Russia and the Russian people. And so I am very sorry that Russia’s aggressive actions since 2014 have led to the situation in which we find ourselves now. Now we have much less opportunities for cooperation and negotiations. But we are ready to sit down for negotiations within the Russia-NATO Council, schedule meetings, talk on various topics of European security, respond to Russian concerns and find a way to avoid a new armed conflict in Europe,” Stoltenberg said.
He assures that NATO does not pose a threat to Russia.
“We are working to implement a political solution and improve the scenario. But we are also prepared for the worst - a new armed conflict, for Russia to again use military forces against its neighbor - Ukraine. And we call on Russia to de-escalate, to reduce tension and to work conscientiously, to engage in political dialogue. This is the best for the Russian people, this is the best for the people of NATO countries and for all of us. Russia has a choice. Russia can decide not to invade, not to use military force and to respect the territorial boundaries of all nations, all states in Europe and come to the negotiating table. We are ready to sit down at the negotiating table and listen to their concerns, negotiate on issues of interest to Russia and NATO,” Stoltenberg said.
