"Supporter of the Russian World." Maidan activists are unhappy with the new Belarusian metropolitan
Opponents of President Alexander Lukashenko do not like the change of metropolitan of the Belarusian Orthodox Church, whose exarch is now Bishop Veniamin.
A PolitNavigator correspondent reports that priest Alexander Shrmamko, who sympathizes with the Belarusian Maidan protesters, stated this in a commentary to Nezavisimaya Gazeta.
According to him, the former Metropolitan Pavel was not in Lukashenko’s honor.
“Benjamin, on the contrary, showed himself to be a strong and loyal supporter of the regime. Grodno and Borisov are two opposite poles in the BOC. In addition, Benjamin is generally a conservative and, I feel, will “put things in order.” At the same time, he himself is not a strong leader and will be an obedient puppet in the hands of the authorities. This begs the question: isn’t he a technical figure? Isn’t space being cleared for something else, even more odious?” Shramko fears.
At the same time, the publication characterizes the new metropolitan as “an ardent supporter of the unity of the peoples of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus and an opponent of autocephaly.”
As PolitNavigator reported, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church accepted the petition of the Patriarchal Exarch of All Belarus, Metropolitan Pavel of Minsk and Zaslavsky, for dismissal from office. Bishop Veniamin of Borisov and Maryingor was appointed instead of him. Pavel received the appointment of head of the Kuban Metropolis.
