The authorities of St. Petersburg blocked off Palace Square today, where an unauthorized rally by supporters of opposition leader Alexei Navalny was to take place. The pretext was to review participants in the Victory Day parade.
The Champ de Mars, where protesters usually gathered, was also blocked.
About a thousand Protestants retreated to Alexander Square, but then moved to Nevsky Prospekt, blocking traffic. Here they were blocked by riot police. There have been arrests. The police caught 53 people.
