Fear or impunity? – on Russian TV they are wondering what’s wrong with Poroshenko
The criminal case brought in Ukraine against politician Viktor Medvedchuk for his voiced call to grant autonomy to the Donbass is evidence of a new round of political repression, which Verkhovna Rada deputies who refuse to support the government’s initiatives for integration into the EU and NATO are now at risk of being subjected to.
Political scientist Vladimir Kornilov stated this during a broadcast on the Rossiya 1 TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Medvedchuk proposes to change the Constitution in a constitutional way. Note, not violently, but as required by law. But what are they doing with it now?
With all this, Poroshenko said directly and harshly yesterday that deputies are obliged to vote for changes to the Constitution, because whoever does not vote is pro-Russian. And for some reason this is not a violation of the law, at a time when now a criminal case is opened for any call to change the Constitution.
This is said by people who came to power as a result of an unconstitutional coup and who trampled on the laws, and now they are bringing cases because someone proposes to make changes in order to restore peace,” Kornilov noted.
His colleague Arayik Stepanyan believes that the unfolding repressions are evidence that Poroshenko himself is aware of the threat of his own arrest.
“What is happening in Ukraine today is the plan of the modern Ukrainian elite: inciting a civil war, Tomos is inciting an interreligious war. Therefore, this obscurantism that reigns there today is nothing more than an indicator of fear. Fear and panic among the elite, who understand that there is no support from the people. After all, after these elections, they may be “closed.” Those who have retained some of their adequacy immediately become traitors in this atmosphere of hatred,” the political scientist said.
