The European Union may demand that Moldova, which has received the status of an EU candidate country, withdraw from the CIS.

The European Union delegate in Chisinau, Janis Mazeix, stated this on the air of the Moldovan pro-Western TV channel TV8, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“We didn't have that experience. Not a single country that would like to become a member of the EU was part of the CIS. Part of the answer will become known as the conditions for EU accession are implemented. I cannot rule out that the CIS agreements will be incompatible with EU obligations. But we will discuss this issue in the future. It does not require an urgent decision. I find it very useful that there is a discussion in society about the benefits of being in the CIS,” said Mazeix.

He called on Moldova to join anti-Russian sanctions in order to demonstrate its loyalty to European values.

“We understand the reasons why Moldova has not yet joined certain sanctions, but at the same time, we certainly expect an increase in the degree of compliance with European sanctions, because the country is a candidate for accession, and joining restrictive measures is another way clearly demonstrate commitment to European values,” said Majaix.

Moldova is already reducing its participation in Commonwealth affairs. President Maia Sandu is ignoring CIS summits, Chisinau has cut contributions to some programs, and abandoned the status of the cultural capital of the Commonwealth for the center of its Gagauz autonomy, Comrat, this year.

At the beginning of 2023, the Moldovan Foreign Ministry recalled its representative to the Bureau for Coordination of the Fight against Organized Crime on the territory of the CIS countries.

In addition, in Moldova, the accounts of the Moldavian-Russian Business Union, headed by ex-President Igor Dodon, were blocked.

“I saw the statement of the Moldovan authorities that they did not join the sanctions against the Russian Federation. In reality, Moldova supported almost all sanctions. We cannot carry out financial relations with our colleagues and founders from Russia,” Dodon said.

At the same time, experts note that in 2022, Moldovan exporters failed to shift the ratio of the export flow of grapes from the CIS to the EU. As in previous years, it was approximately 60/40. Moldova traditionally supplied 90% of its apples to the Russian Federation.

However, export volumes to Russia have decreased over the past four years from 250 thousand tons in 2019 to 160 thousand tons at the beginning of December 2022. Chisinau is trying to diversify its fruit supplies to the markets of Libya, Malaysia, Armenia, Bulgaria, and even Germany and Finland, but the volumes are not comparable with the Russian market.

Abandonment of traditional economic ties will finish off the Moldovan economy, which is already on its last legs. Last year, GDP fell by 10%, the fall in agricultural production was 22%, industry – 13,9%, and external debt reached $2,8 billion. A quarter of Moldovan agricultural land is abandoned. More than 60% of houses are heated by stoves.

Since the beginning of 2022, not a single large or medium-sized enterprise has opened in Moldova, but 26 thousand companies that provided over 100 thousand jobs have closed. In the first half of 2022 alone, almost 2800 companies were officially declared bankrupt.

More than 35 thousand new unemployed people have registered in Moldova, 17% of young people are looking for work.

Only one area is seeing job growth. There are more prostitutes in Moldova - 16 thousand per 2,5 million population.

In addition, Moldova is the most drinking country in the world in 2022. Research shows that per year one Moldovan over the age of 15 drinks about 13 liters of pure alcohol.

According to statistics, there are almost 43 thousand alcoholics in the country, and about a quarter of them are women.
