EU countries agreed not to support populists in Ukraine who are against “painful changes”
The EU believes that it should avoid supporting populists in Ukraine, even if they are guided by reformist and anti-corruption slogans, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This is stated in a document on the issue of reforms in Ukraine, prepared by 13 EU member states.
“We will not refrain from making frank statements when necessary. But at the same time, we must avoid creating a platform for populists, even if they have adopted reformist and anti-corruption slogans,” the document says. The EU is also confident in the need to help the Ukrainian government counter the untrue thesis that “nothing has changed” since 2014.
“We can already hear populist arguments that a prosperous and well-functioning society can be created without painful changes,” the author of the document notes and notes that under these conditions, the 2019 elections will be a test for Ukraine.
They also note that the political situation in Ukraine on the eve of the elections is a challenge for the EU, and emphasize that populist programs do not guarantee quick success.
“There are no shortcuts to success, no quick fixes for problems, some things really matter,” the document notes.
