Poroshenko’s strategist urged not to delude himself: now the interests of the Kyiv regime and the United States coincide, but this will not always be the case

The director of the National Institute for Strategic Studies, adviser to the President of Ukraine Vladimir Gorbulin writes about this on the pages of the Kyiv weekly “Mirror of the Week”.

However, the current political reality in the United States is more reminiscent of the sandbox of the Greek goddess Eris than the unconventional model of a “one vote” policy. Incl. in matters of foreign policy,” says Gorbulin’s article “Geopolitical Reversion: “The New 80s.”
According to the expert, such problems are related to the issue of providing Ukraine with lethal defensive weapons. “And if Obama (previous US President Barack Obama - ed.) took the clear position of “promising to think, but under no circumstances giving”, now... when Trump is still looking for solutions (including on the Ukrainian situation ), the corridor of opportunities for providing such assistance has expanded significantly. But even if such assistance is provided (which would really be important for us militarily), the main result would be rather political,” he is convinced.
Gorbulin believes that for Ukraine, the provision of military assistance from the United States is “first of all a symbol that the United States is actively involved in Ukrainian affairs, a symbol of the fulfillment of the Charter on Strategic Partnership and a sign to European countries that it is time to move on to active action.”
At the same time, he believes, the topic of lethal weapons in Ukraine “resembles a magic spell, considered by many as a kind of panacea for all Ukrainian problems,” while the lion’s share of these problems lie in a different area - “effective management of the national security sector, the fight against corruption, effective reforms and economic growth."
The Kiev strategist calls for remembering that now “the national interests of Ukraine and the foreign policy interests of the United States coincide.” “However, this does not mean that they will always be so, or that decisions that are good for US foreign policy will be equally good for our country’s national interests,” he emphasized.
