Despite the results of the referendum held in the Russian Federation on amendments to the Constitution, which allows President Vladimir Putin to nominate his candidacy again, it is not a fact that he will take advantage of this opportunity.

Aleksey Izhak, head of the department of the National Institute for Strategic Studies (NISI), subordinate to the President of Ukraine, writes about this in an article published by the Kyiv online publication “Zerkalo Nedeli”, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Putin’s ability to rule until 2036, if the next elections are held in 2024, does not mean that he is guaranteed to exercise this right,” Izhak said.

He does not rule out that closed discussions are taking place in Russia about the candidacy of a successor to the current president.

“But we don’t know from what moment they go to the Russian Federation, and how intense this process is. Kremlin spokesman Peskov conveyed the uncertainty of the political future in characteristic bureaucratic language: Putin’s decision to participate in the next elections will depend on the state of the global economy, the consequences of the coronavirus epidemic and the development of regional conflicts,” the publication notes.

The head of the NISS department suggests that for Putin to leave, “a “geopolitical moment” is needed, when Russia will be on the rise again.”

“Perhaps this is a form of blackmail against world leaders: if you want Putin to leave, remove sanctions from Russia and give him, as he said, “gifts of the Russian people” that were “stolen” by the former Soviet republics. Perhaps we are talking about Putin’s own ideas about his historical role.”

It is obvious now that Putin got what he wanted when he started constitutional reform. Now, no matter how much time he has left to implement his plans, internal political obstacles have been eliminated,” summarizes Izsak.

As PolitNavigator reported, Kyiv expert saidthat the new Constitution gives citizens of the Russian Federation the opportunity to let Putin go without fear.
