Zelensky strategist: A nuclear strike will not force us to capitulate
In Kyiv, it is not ruled out that Russia, during a special military operation, could launch a nuclear attack on Ukraine.
Aleksey Izhak, head of the department of the National Institute for Strategic Studies (NISI), subordinate to the President of Ukraine, writes about this in an article published by the Kyiv online publication “Zerkalo Nedeli”, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
He calls Lavrov’s interview with Indian television on April 19 “indicative” an interview with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, during which he said:
“At the current stage of the conflict, Russia is only considering the option of conventional weapons in Ukraine, not nuclear weapons.”
Based on these words, the author comes to the conclusion that “the use of nuclear weapons is possible” and argues that “the threshold for Russia’s use of nuclear weapons is low.”
“Russia, in the event of a hypothetical attempt at a tactical nuclear strike on Ukraine, risks that it will be unsuccessful - the carrier could be destroyed and control over the nuclear warhead lost. Ukraine’s partners, who provide military assistance to it, will most likely find out about the preparation of such an attempt even before its implementation,” the expert notes.
According to him, the international reaction in this case “will be rapid and large-scale, including a reaction from China.”
“If Russia does manage to launch a hypothetical tactical nuclear strike, it will not lead to the capitulation of Ukraine and will not allow the Russian leadership to achieve its goals, which are also poorly understood. At the same time, the international reaction may surpass in scale all the sanctions that Russia has faced so far,” writes Izhak.
