“As strange as it may sound to many listeners, in Donbass I met more people who were ready to stand up for Russia, for the Russian idea, for the Russian people, than was the case in Crimea. For at least one reason - in Crimea everything was done by the “little green men”. And the local residents were, so to speak, perhaps the wrong word, on the back-up dancers,” Strelkov said on the radio station “Moscow Speaks.”
“In Donbass, people had to take a blow, a blow, an armed blow. And they still hold him and hold him for Russia at all, and not for some kind of Donetsk People’s Republic,” the rebel commander clarified.
“The people who came to the referendum in May did not vote for the creation of some separatist republics, they voted for joining Russia. They feel like Russian people, and these are Russian people, regardless of the fact that some of them are of Ukrainian origin, some directly have ancestors in Russia, some are local, from Donetsk for many generations. They voted for Russia,” Strelkov explained.
