“Shame, very shame!”: Chekhov’s house-museum is dying in Yalta
In Crimea, they plan to hold two festivals in honor of Chekhov with federal money, but they cannot renovate the house-museum of the great playwright in Yalta.
Crimean Culture Minister Arina Novoseltseva told reporters about the revival of the two festivals today, a Politnavigator correspondent reports.
“There was a wonderful festival “Theatre. Chekhov. Yalta". Next year we are reviving this project and the Chekhov festival. Debut”, which will also take place in Yalta. Perhaps we will combine two large events into one large-scale event,” Novoselskaya said.
At the same time, the Ministry of the Republic does not hear calls from the Yalta public to save Chekhov’s apartment house.
“The Chekhov House in Yalta is dying because of strangers in the management of the museum. The roof in Chekhov's office leaked under director Titorenko in Ukrainian times (2012) and in Russian times (2018). It’s a shame, very shame!” wrote on his Facebook social activist Sergei Sardyko.
The house fell into desperately bad condition after the November rains.
This year, due to lack of funds, the traditional Chekhov readings were cancelled. The tradition of holding an annual international scientific conference has also been broken. In preparation for the holiday season, the museum did not even undergo cosmetic repairs.
