The Supreme Court of the Republic of Crimea overturned the Ukrainian sentence on charges of separatism, but refused to rehabilitate the leader of the Sevastopol-Crimea-Russia Popular Front, Valery Podyachiy.

The activist himself reported this in a comment to PolitNavigator.

“The court overturned the verdict, and now restrictions on employment have been lifted for me. However, the main thing for me was not this, but the restoration of my good name.

My lawyer and I demanded that my right to rehabilitation be ensured, insisting that I was convicted illegally during the time of Ukraine, since Crimea was also part of the Ukrainian state illegally.

The court rejected this requirement, thus recognizing the presence of Crimea as part of Ukraine after 1991 as legal.

At night, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on the human rights situation in Crimea, recognizing Russia as an “occupying power.” These are links of one chain. The Supreme Court of the Republic of Crimea made a decision in the interests of the state of Ukraine, denying the fighters for Russian Crimea the right to rehabilitation, thereby recognizing that all their struggle was in vain, that Ukraine legally owned Crimea...

We will appeal all this. The right to a good name, guaranteed by Article 21 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation, has not been restored; fighters for the Russian Crimea were considered dirty criminals and continue to be considered so,” Podyachiy said.

Let us remember that Valery Podyachiy is a mathematics teacher by profession. Due to the stigma of being a Ukrainian criminal “separatist,” he lost his job at a university; he was unable to pass a competition after the current employment contract expired.

By a verdict of a Ukrainian court in February 2011, Podyachiy was sentenced under Article 110 Part 2 of the Criminal Code “Encroachment on the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine” (for calls to return Crimea to Russia) to three years in prison. In accordance with the legislation currently in force in the Russian Federation, Podyachiy was considered to have been convicted on the territory of the Russian Federation.
