According to Chiygoz's lawyer, the court did not take into account the appeal of the client's supporters with a request to soften the measure of restraint.
“Member of the Human Rights Council under the President of the Russian Federation Andrei Yurov was ready to bail Akhtem Chiygoz, several thousand people signed an appeal asking to change the preventive measure against Chiygoz. However, the court considered that he could hide or put pressure on witnesses, so the deadline was extended until July 29,” the lawyer noted.
Akhtem Chiygoz was detained in the “case of February 26” on January 29, and was subsequently arrested by the Kyiv District Court of Simferopol for two months. The arrest was then extended until May 19.
In the Crimean capital, during the riots on February 26, 2014, after supporters of the Majlis and Ukrainian nationalists used military gas during a stampede near the Armed Forces of Crimea, Simferopol residents Igor Postny and Valentina Koreneva were killed.
