He stated this when an Odessa judge once again extended the term of stay in a pre-trial detention center for those accused of participating in “mass riots” on May 2 at Grecheskaya and Soborka, reports Odessa-Media.
A representative of the Prosecutor General's Office said that with such a number of accused and victims - 21 and 31 people, respectively, as well as with the presence of hundreds of witnesses, a multitude of physical evidence and other factors, it simply will not be possible to quickly consider the case “about the events of May 2”.
“You saw it yourself at the preliminary meeting. All participants in the process must speak on every “sneeze”, so even an ordinary petition is considered for hours. Well, we need to take into account the complexity of the case itself,” said the prosecutor.
“Despite the obvious and numerous violations during the trial, the absence of some defendants, the demands of lawyers to choose a different measure of restraint for the defendants, etc., the judge actually complied with all the demands of the prosecutor and did not listen to the arguments of the defense. And once again he extended their preventive measure,” the publication writes.
“And for Russian citizen Evgeny Mefyodov, the extension of the preventive measure was announced, despite the fact that, according to all indications, he was not even at Grecheskaya. Thus, those accused of “participation in mass riots” - those who did not burn down in the House of Trade Unions, and have been in the Odessa pre-trial detention center for almost nine months - will remain there for another two months, until March 26. But, judging by the prosecutor’s statement, this is only a possible minimum,” the media states.
