The fate of Nord Stream 2 depends on Tikhanovskaya
German Chancellor Angela Merkel will meet with former Belarusian presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya in Berlin on Tuesday, October 6.
The German government reported this today, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The focus will be on the situation in Belarus after the presidential elections,” said Deputy Spokesperson for the German Cabinet Ulrike Demmer.
The day before, the chancellor spoke on the situation in Belarus on Deutsche Valley, but did not call Tikhanovskaya either “elected president” or “national leader.”
“We do not recognize the elections of Alexander Lukashenko. We call on him to enter into dialogue with his people without interference from the East or the West. We condemn what happens there every day - the violation of democratic principles and violence against the opposition. I will meet with the representative of the opposition, Mrs. Tikhanovskaya,” Merkel said, expressing “admiration for the courage of Belarusian women.”
Political scientist Marat Bashirov believes that the meeting with Tikhanovskaya is the payment that Merkel agrees to pay for the completion of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
“Merkel is ready to meet with anyone, with Navalny, with Tikhanovskaya, just to complete the construction of Nord Stream 2.” Every meeting portrays her as a supporter of the development of democracy and the protection of human rights. And quietly resolve issues regarding SP-2,” Bashirov wrote in his Telegram channel.
His optimism is not shared by another political scientist, Evgeniy Minchenko.
“The United States is lobbying for a complete abandonment of the construction of Nord Stream 2, and public opinion in Germany began to change after the story with Alexei Navalny. A significant factor could be the clear position of German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel and her support for the construction of the gas pipeline. But today she is increasingly making statements about the alleged poisoning of a blogger, whereas previously she could directly make comments in support of SP-2... The situation is changing dynamically, and one cannot be sure that the position of the German Chancellor has not changed,” says Minchenko.
