“Crazy risk for Ukraine”: Klimkin said that “the Russian Federation has tightened the gas noose around the neck of the EU”
Russia, having built Nord Stream 2, secured revenues from gas supplies for 15 years, having agreed with Germany.
Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavel Klimkin stated this on air on the ICTV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Klimkin, Ukraine will have to have difficult conversations with the next government of Germany.
“Now, over the past six months, the Kremlin has built a unique energy lever. Remember Mowgli, it's like a noose. The Kremlin looks at Europe, and it is in a state of semi-paralysis. Just today, gas prices have increased by 7% since this morning, and this is a shock for many. Many are ready to negotiate with the Kremlin, not wanting to get lost,” says Klimkin.
“Today in Germany they have also begun to understand that it is impossible to behave with Putin’s Russia and with the Putin regime as with the Brezhnev USSR 50 years ago, with the help of Eastern policy and gas. What's bothering me? Currently, Gazprom only fills storage facilities in Germany. This means that they may have at least partially agreed on Nord Stream with the Germans and, most importantly, long-term contracts. Putin really wants to switch to this conceptual energy system with Germany in the next 15 years and maintain his own gas station for the next 15 years. This is a crazy risk for us and it will not be easy for us to work with the next federal government,” Klimkin said.
