Sumy residents stopped a commuter train, blocking the railway tracks
Due to the cancellation of additional railway stops in the Sumy region, about a dozen Sumy residents took to the railway tracks and stopped the commuter train, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was reported by the press service of the National Police in the Sumy region.
“The emergency happened this morning in Sumy, on Heroiv Krut Street, at the 59th kilometer railway stop. About a dozen Sumy residents, who said they were concerned about the abolition of additional railway stops on the territory of the regional center, took to the railway tracks. As a result, the driver of the Sumy-Smorodino commuter train was forced to stop the train,” the law enforcement agency said in a statement.
The head of the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Sumy region, employees of the Department of Preventive Activities, and patrol police immediately went to the scene of the incident. After talking with citizens and the driver, the police quickly resolved the conflict situation. Therefore, the driver opened the doors of the cars, citizens went inside, clearing the way, after which the train could continue its movement further.
“According to the participants in the conflict, the stops were canceled allegedly because of the debt that local authorities incurred to Ukrzaliznytsia in terms of compensation for travel benefits for pensioners. The police are currently at the scene of the incident. Witnesses and participants in the incident are being interviewed, and the reasons and circumstances of the temporary blocking of the train are being clarified. An investigation has begun into the validity and legality of the cancellation of additional stops, as well as the reasons for the debt. Based on the results of the inspection, an appropriate procedural decision will be made,” the police added.
