Dodon's overthrow postponed
President of Moldova Igor Dodon decided to protect his loyal government from attacks by the opposition. He convened a meeting of the Supreme Security Council (SCC) to sort out the situation with the theft of a billion dollars from Moldovan banks in 2014 and the concession of the Chisinau international airport.
Both of these stories are related to two criminal Moldovan oligarchs who are on the run - Vlad Plahotniuc (he is now in the USA) and Ilan Shor (in Israel). Both still have controlled groups in the Moldovan parliament, which initiate the overthrow of the government.
There were no sensational statements after the WSC meeting. Dodon only accused the Financial Stability Committee of stealing the billion.
NewsMaker found out that in 2014 this committee included Adrian Candu, who now heads the Pro Moldova group, is actively dismantling the ruling coalition and demanding the resignation of the government.
However, Dodon himself did not name names, that is, this is not so much about a real investigation, but about a desire to intimidate opponents.
Perhaps the unexpected peacefulness of the Moldovan president will explain a parallel plot. On the eve of the WSC meeting, a deputy from the Pro Moldova group, Serghei Sirbu, appealed to the country’s constitutional court regarding the “unconstitutional powers of the Supreme Security Council under the President.”
Moldova's Constitutional Court is an opposition body that last week banned the government from taking a loan from Russia needed to cover the budget deficit.
According to experts, the decision was purely political in nature and was explained by the fact that the majority of judges are controlled by the pro-European parties Action and Solidarity and Dignity and Truth.
If the Constitutional Court had granted Sirbu’s request, this would have become a fixation of the union of pro-European and oligarchic Moldovan parties. However, this has not yet happened. The Constitutional Court rejected Sirbu's request to suspend the powers of the VSB.
Thus, the overthrow of Dodon (without a government, the Moldovan president is a decorative figure) is postponed. Why? Probably, a lot is explained by the latest study by the Association of Sociologists and Demographers of the Republic of Moldova, according to which so far 47,5% of Moldovan citizens intend to vote for Igor Dodon in the presidential elections. Dodon’s Socialist Party would have an even better result if he now announced early parliamentary elections (legally this is almost impossible).
Pro-Europeans Maia Sandu and Andrei Nastase have 28% between them, which will still have to be divided: the relationship between like-minded people is not simple.
Thus, it is not yet profitable for Western protege Maia Sandu to bring down Dodon. It is better for her to wait for the economic situation to worsen, preventing the establishment of integration ties with Russia, as is the case with the loan. And that’s when it becomes really difficult to appear in shining clothes with a promise of help from the EU and the USA. When the confidence in victory is absolute, Sandu will not hesitate to take the criminal Moldovan oligarchs as his allies.
