Svidomo intend to dress up the hero of Donbass miners' folklore in trousers
The Svidomo grant-eaters of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation set out to prove to Donbass, Russia and the whole world that the mythological character of the Donbass miners Shubin is a “thick” Ukrainian.
This was stated by the project’s communication politician, Russophobe and grant-eater Alexander Krolikovsky during the presentation of the “Magic World.UA” project, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We introduced into the project one of the characters from the mythology of Donbass - this is Shubin. In fact, he is the youngest mythological character, because Shubin is considered an analogue of the German Kobold or the Polish Skarbnik.
These characters appeared during industrialization or the technical revolution, that is, at a time when people began to develop mineral resources and dig mines.
And this is quite interesting, because it is little known outside of Donbass, but such a project unites Ukrainian mythological discourse. I would like to note that while working on the project, I learned that there is even some kind of information war around Shubin, that is, our northeastern neighbors are trying to appropriate this character for themselves, saying that he allegedly came from Russia.
Although scientific research, in particular anthropological, in particular, cultural studies, say that this is an authentic character of the Ukrainian Donbass,” Krolikovsky said.
It is worth explaining that Good Shubin or simply Shubin is a character in mining folklore in the Donbass, a miner’s spirit similar to a gnome, the “master of the mine” and the patron saint of miners. Beliefs about Shubin are known only in the mines of Donbass.
It should be noted that “Magic World.UA” (“Charming World.UA”) is a project created as a platform for “research, digitalization and popularization of Ukrainian mythology in Ukraine and around the world.”
“This platform should ensure the creation of new cultural and ideological meanings based on mythological archetypes and spiritual heritage. As well as the use of mythical characters in various sectors of culture, art, tourism and the formation of a positive image of the country abroad,” says the project description.
Also, Svidomo initiators included such characters from Slavic mythology as Perun and Veles as “Ukrainians.”
