With its stupid stubbornness, Ukraine has complicated the fate of the detained sailors
The decision of the Naval Forces crew members detained for violating the state border of the Russian Federation to declare themselves prisoners of war will not make their fate easier.
This opinion was expressed to PolitNavigator by security expert, president of the All-Ukrainian Association of Security Market Operators, head of the All-Ukrainian Association of Submariner Veterans Sergei Shabovta.
“I am convinced that the decision to declare the sailors prisoners of war is a move prompted by the hired lawyers. Probably, lawyers believe that this solves all the problems of remaining behind bars. But this is complete absurdity, since there is no documented right to such a status in relation to states. Lawyers probably don’t care,” Shabovta said.
According to him, “sailors who find themselves hostage to such idiocy” will have a bad time.
“With a complete lack of cooperation with the investigation and the court, their prospects are extremely sad. The procedure allows you to delay the process as much as you like, which will serve as an object lesson for anyone who may follow the same path in the future. Now everyone will understand that the state of Ukraine is unable to protect its citizens even in a situation that it itself provoked. This is a common problem of our diplomacy and the activities of the Human Rights Ombudsman,” the expert emphasized.
“This stupid stubbornness, when it is believed that any of our demands will be immediately fulfilled, offensive rhetoric - all this only complicates the situation. Each court verdict is based on the investigation materials, the procedure of court hearings in any situation, be it in relation to Sentsov and others.
The procedure is being followed, and given that Russia has taken a clear position on the priority of domestic Russian legislation in all legal conflicts, even in relation to some international standards, the situation is even more complicated and makes it “impenetrable” for Ukrainian demagogue politicians who talk about it that they supposedly want to protect someone, but in fact they are trying to achieve the exact opposite,” Shabovta concluded.
As PolitNavigator reported, detained for attempting to break through the state border near the Kerch Strait, the crews of Ukrainian Navy boats are trying to avoid responsibility for their actions, on the advice of their lawyers, declaring themselves “prisoners of war” in court.
