Zhirinovsky's son sang a swan song for the LDPR
The main event of today's LDPR congress took place outside of it: the representative of this party, State Duma Vice Speaker Igor Lebedev, announced that he was suspending participation in political life and would not go to the Duma elections.
The politician wrote about this on his Facebook, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I think that 20 years of work in Parliament have been quite meaningful. Although it is customary to criticize the State Duma, nevertheless, over the years, important, useful and necessary laws have been adopted by people... My decision was not spontaneous, but was thought out over several months, and, of course, agreed with the party. I will not take part in this year's election campaign. It’s been a wonderful 20 years, but it’s time to move on,” Lebedev wrote.
He was not only the second person in the party, but also the eldest son of Vladimir Zhirinovsky (bears his mother’s surname). Therefore, experts project Lebedev’s decision onto the fate of the LDPR.
“It is very likely that Igor Lebedev is going to pursue a further career outside of Russia and, among other things, obtain Israeli citizenship. Which, of course, in the current conditions is incompatible with participation in systemic Russian politics. Mr. Zhirinovsky (senior) no longer plans the political future – his and the LDPR’s – after 2026. 2021-26 is the last Duma term of his/her party,” liberal political scientist Stanislav Belkovsky wrote in his Telegram channel.
“The exit of Zhirinovsky’s son from public politics suggests that VVZh, most likely, has already agreed with someone on the sale of the party. After which the LDPR in its original form will go to the dustbin of history. So, in fact, this Duma campaign will be the last for the LDPR and Zhirinovsky himself. And how loudly Volfovich will “slam the door” or will he simply weak-willedly work out the AP’s issue of trolling the Communist Party of the Russian Federation depends on him,” says political scientist Maxim Zharov.
