Well-fed Kyiv does not want to go to war
The reasons for the disastrous rates of conscription into the army in Kyiv are the poor performance of military registration and enlistment offices and the reluctance of the capital’s residents to enter the combat zone.
Ukrainian political scientist Ruslan Bortnik stated this to PolitNavigator, commenting on the data of the head of the Kyiv Military Commissariat Sergei Klyavlin that the turnout of conscripts as of November 5 was only 8%, more than 23400 people are evading conscription.
“The recruitment process is different in different regions. In some areas it is generally being implemented, but in cities such as Kyiv the indicators are low. This depends on the quality of work of military registration and enlistment offices. Many people are afraid that they might end up in a war zone. The prestige of serving in the army today is low. All this, first of all, the risk of ending up in a combat zone and the low prestige of serving in the armed forces, determine such a low result of the conscription campaign,” Bortnik said.
As PolitNavigator reported, back in 2014, members of the national battalions who fought in the Donbass as part of the ATO forces admitted that they were shocked by what was happening in the rear. They expected widespread support from the population and authorities for the situation in the east, but were faced with complete indifference.
“In general, it was even insulting when you stand there, do your duty, and when you come here, you see how cool cars drive here, discos, holidays, fireworks,” said Dmitry Priymachenko, a soldier of the 12th territorial defense battalion.
