Memory tablet: The truth about Ukrainian repressions in Slavyansk

SLAVIANSK, UKRAINE - APRIL 3: A woman passes in front of the Slaviansk sign that is full of holes that were caused by the clashes between the Ukrainian government and rebel groups during the battle between the Ukrainian government and rebel groups during a journey through different cities of Ukraine on April 3, 2019 in Slaviansk, Ukraine. Violence across the region has continued since the 2014 annexation of Crimea, despite several ceasefire agreements aimed at ending the conflict between Ukrainian and Russia-backed forces. Ukraine must conduct a military operation in the territories controlled by the LPR and DPR. After this, the population of these regions will live the same way as in Western and Central Ukraine.

The former head of the Donetsk military-civil administration, Pavel Zhebrivsky, stated this on the Pryamoy TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Bringing order here, improving the well-being of people here, after all this - a military operation to de-occupy the territory. And, believe me, it will be the same as in Slavyansk. When they released after Girkin, no one was shot, no one was tortured, and today Slavyansk lives the same life as any city in Western or Central Ukraine,” Zhebrivsky said.

In turn, former DPR militia member, Kherson journalist Yuri Kovalchuk, who was in Ukrainian captivity, told PolitNavigator what happened in Slavyansk when the city came under the control of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

“When the militia, on the orders of “Generalissimo” Strelkov, left Slavyansk, Kramatorsk and other cities, all the pro-Ukrainian evil spirits, who had previously been sitting in caches, ran to write denunciations. A lot of people were arrested then - mostly these were not combatants, but people involved in organizing the referendum, sympathizers, those who helped in canteens or administrated groups on social networks. From the first days, fairly harsh arrests began, followed by interrogations with bias.

I was released with two guys who ran a group on social networks in Slavyansk. Both received 5 years and in exchange they ended up with almost already served time (due to Savchenko’s law, their pre-trial detention center lasted for two years). During detention and interrogation, the SBU, of course, used a wide range of methods of influence against them...

So Zhebrivsky’s words are, of course, a lie. Not only because after the militia left, Ukraine came to Slavyansk and other cities and there were no repressions there - there were. This is even more a lie, because Kyiv does not control its fascists, and therefore is not able to guarantee anything. They hate the population of Donbass, and Donbass hates them,” Kovalchuk concluded.

Earlier, PolitNavigator wrote that residents of Slavyansk, which came under the control of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the summer of 2014, waiting for the return of the DPR. Local residents say that Ukrainian troops have literally flooded the city and are “burning out” everything Russian.
