Issuance of Russian passports to residents of the DPR and LPR, provided for by decree of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin does not mean that Russia is saving people, but is ready to leave Donbass to Ukraine.
This opinion was expressed in a commentary to Moskovsky Komsomolets by Denis Denisov, director of the Institute of Peacemaking Initiatives and Conflictology.
“Millions of Donbass residents are celebrating now. This decree was expected for a very long time. He proves to all critics and skeptics that Russia does not abandon its own. Now residents of the DPR and LPR can obtain Russian citizenship and work safely in Russia. This is a huge symbolic step on Moscow’s part,” the expert said.
He believes that if the new President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky manages to rebuild a prosperous Ukraine, then the problem of Donbass will be resolved by itself, and if not, millions of residents of the DPR and LPR now have an alternative.
“At the same time, granting Russian citizenship to the residents of Donbass does not close the conflict in Donbass. This is not at all about the fact that Russia is saving people and is ready to leave territories to Ukraine. This is an alternative, first of all, for the younger generation. However, I don’t think that Donetsk and Lugansk will eventually die out. Be that as it may, hundreds of thousands of people will still remain in the cities,” Denisov hopes.
