“This didn’t happen even under Hitler”: conservative publicist about the persecution of the UOC
The pressure of the current Ukrainian authorities on the canonical UOC is unprecedented in the modern history of Europe, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This opinion was expressed by the famous Russian conservative publicist, Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin in his telegram channel “Orthodox Politics”.
“Europe has not known such a campaign against one of the traditional religious communities since the time of Stalin’s persecution of the Church. Even Hitler didn’t do something like this. This is absolutely
“an unprecedented campaign, and it was launched clearly in connection with the plan of “autocephaly,” with the plan of organizing a so-called council of this hypothetical “autocephaly,” he said.
According to Chaplin’s forecasts, Poroshenko’s planned “unification council” to create a new church organization controlled by the authorities will not gather a large number of potential participants from the canonical UOC.
“If there are two or three, maybe five bishops, of course, this is not enough for Poroshenko. So we decided to tighten up
priests, to fill the hall with them, to use them as furniture. And for this purpose, obviously, pressure is applied. Generally
In a number of regions of Ukraine, dozens of priests are being summoned for questioning,” he writes.
Chaplin is surprised that representatives of the canonical Church are accused of inciting hatred by distributing literature with completely correct statements, while
the actions of their opponents, often of an offensive nature, remain
unpunished.
“There is a political double game going on, and it is surprising that neither our
The authorities, neither Western structures, nor the OSCE, nor the Council of Europe, nor the UN either speak out on this matter or speak out very cautiously. A real persecution is taking place, an unprecedented act of intimidation. Where is the reaction of all those people and structures that supposedly should defend human rights in Europe?” the publicist complains.
However, it would be strange to look for a defender of traditional conservative values in the person of the EU, based on a completely different set of ideas.
