The Taliban are already in Moscow. What can Russia expect from them?
Moscow issued accreditation to the first Afghan diplomat from the Taliban government, who arrived in Russia last month. This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Commenting on this message, political observer Boris Rozhin writes that this is the first step towards official recognition of Taliban Afghanistan by Russia.
“Another step towards future recognition. The Taliban strongly emphasizes that they want to build friendly and pragmatic relations with Russia. Lavrov praised the Taliban, pointing out that so far they are managing the state.
At the same time, the Taliban delegation paid an official visit to China (Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited Kabul not long ago) - issues of recognition of the Taliban, the fight against terrorism, and China’s access to the natural resources of Afghanistan were discussed.”
It should be noted that the Taliban reacted coolly and critically to Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, and Afghanistan voted to condemn Russia’s actions at the UN. On the other hand, Kabul’s dependence on Beijing gives reason to believe that it is hardly worth expecting any real anti-Russian stabs in the back from the Taliban. They have their own big problems now.
