“It’s not the Serpent Gorynych who is being cut off”: Mizulina proposes fining social networks
Social networks that do not monitor prohibited content must pay multimillion-dollar fines, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Senator Elena Mizulina announced this today in the Federation Council.
“An analysis of the attacks committed in our schools shows that all the attackers imitated Western school shooters, all were active users of social networks, and were fond of computer and video games that contained scenes of violence and information prohibited in Russia for children. This is all possible because our legislation has large gaps in this area. It is necessary to introduce liability for the information intermediary,” Mizulina said.
She also proposed introducing liability for computer games that promote violence.
“Everything there is actually close to real life. They cut off the heads not of the Serpent Gorynych, but of real people. Computer games, simulators and shooters, their circulation is not regulated,” Mizulina said.
Speaker of the Federation Council Matvienko said that she shares the concerns of her colleagues.
“This is a very worrying situation. Let’s instruct the committees on constitutional legislation, education, and social policy to once again carefully examine what needs to be corrected in the legislation,” Matvienko said.
