The contract expires on July 24. According to the Kommersant newspaper, Moscow does not intend to renew the agreement - there is no such issue on the State Duma agenda. The publication explains that if the problem inherited from the “parade of sovereignties” of the 90s is not quietly closed, Tatarstan’s special rights may arouse the jealousy of other regions.
However, in Kazan the local state council intends to raise the issue of prolonging the contract on July 11. It is interesting that among the arguments of supporters of the extension of the treaty is the special role of Tatarstan, which it played during the Russian Spring in 2014.
“The desire to demonstrate to oneself and others the “unification” of relations with the regions and the creation of a single legal field conflicts with the special role played by Tatarstan - both as an “exhibition” region demonstrating effective management projects, and as an intermediary that carried out delicate missions to establish communications with the Crimean Tatars during the annexation of Crimea,” the newspaper quotes a report from the St. Petersburg Politics Foundation.
