EU telephone operators will be forced to cancel roaming in EU countries

More than a year ago, the majority in the European Parliament approved an appeal to telecommunications companies demanding that all tariffs be brought to a single standard and the abolition of so-called “roaming” payments, when additional money is charged for using your number in another EU country. Cellular network operators responded to this decision with sabotage, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports from Berlin.

Lobbying circles associated with telecommunications giants have made significant efforts to endlessly delay the entry into force of this decision.

A single tariff was supposed to be introduced in 2015, but now the complete abolition of roaming fees is scheduled for June 15, 2017. This means that, for example, a German citizen will pay the same amount for calls and SMS in other EU countries as in his home country. Upper limit tariffs for services will also be established. After the decision comes into force, a German citizen will pay a maximum of 5 cents for an outgoing call (including abroad within the EU) and a maximum of two cents for SMS. These rates will include VAT.

As observers note, such a significant reduction in prices became possible thanks to the rapid development of Internet telephony and messenger programs. Already, not only young people, but also older people are using smartphones connected to the Internet to communicate for free with their friends and colleagues around the world.
