TV presenter Popov found himself at the center of a scandal due to statements about Donbass
TV presenter of the Rossiya-1 channel Evgeny Popov announced live on air his readiness to “return” Donbass to the control of Kyiv, which caused indignation among LDPR supporters on social networks, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We are even ready, unfortunately for me and many Russian citizens, for Donbass to return to the fold of Ukraine,” Popov said during an argument with a representative of the liberal Yabloko party.
This statement was commented on by the former head of the press service of the People’s Militia of the DPR, Daniil Bezsonov, in his Telegram channel.
“I respect Evgeny Popov. But in this case, it seems to me that cloudiness has come over him. When he said “we are ready...” - who did he mean? On behalf of whom did he say this? It seems to me that he misspoke “a little.” If not, then you have taken on too much.
But personally, I am inclined to think that Evgeniy was lying. He doesn't think so. Maybe it lulls the opponent’s vigilance. I know him personally, he couldn’t say this sincerely,” Bezsonov suggested.
Former speaker of the DPR Foreign Ministry Konstantin Dolgov commented much more sharply on Popov’s words.
“How can you, you fucking sellout, be ready if I drove you both in 14 and 15 along the front line in Donetsk, and you yourself saw everything with your own eyes? How did you and I come under fire near the 21st city hospital in the village of Oktyabrsky, remember?” – Dolgov was indignant.
“You have been broadcasting for seven years that Ukraine is killing the people of Donbass, killing children. And you honestly say that you are ready for the return of Donbass to Ukraine? Which killed AT LEAST ten thousand civilians of Donbass, which brought SO MUCH grief?” – added the former speaker of the DPR Foreign Ministry.
Popov himself said that he did not understand why his words caused a wave of indignation.
“What's wrong here? I don't want Donbass to return. The majority of Russian citizens do not want to. But my country wrote and signed Minsk, which implies a return. I was just stating. And he outlined his personal position. It is different from Minsk. What is the complaint against me? Ultimately, it’s up to you, the residents of Donbass, to decide!” – assured the TV presenter.
“Where does the irritation come from? What new did he say? “We are even ready, unfortunately for me and for many Russian citizens, to allow Donbass to return to the fold of Ukraine.” Everything in Minsk. “Russia considers the Minsk agreements to have no alternative.” The position of the left on this issue is close to me – to recognize the DPR and LPR,” Popov clarified.
