Verkhovna Rada deputy, member of the Servant of the People presidential faction and athlete Jean Belenyuk, who won a gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling at the recent Tokyo Olympics, admitted that he visits the temple of the UOC of the Moscow Patriarchate, which is persecuted in Ukraine.

He stated this in an interview with the wife of the notorious PR charlatan and anti-Russian propaganda Alesya Batsman, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

The MP-athlete said that he visits the Holy Protection Church on Mostytska Street in Kyiv.

“Yes, this is the Moscow Patriarchate church. But the fact is that this is the church that my grandmother went to, she was very religious, I am very far from it, I don’t go to it very often. Accordingly, it is located five steps from my house. And I still, I live in a different place, but I still come back to her. I go there, everyone knows me there. So, I just came - everyone congratulated me, they almost stopped the service in order to congratulate me. When I injured my shoulder, I also came, they blessed me and sent me to these competitions. This is my place of power. Accordingly, the last thing I think about is whose patriarchy and everything else it is,” Belenyuk said.

At the same time, Batsman tried to find out from the politician whether he heard “Moscow narratives” during his service.

“Sorry, Moscow negativity, Russian world through the church, which is essentially headed by Kirill, the Russian patriarch. Have you ever heard anything like this, or in your case with this church, with these clergy, it has absolutely nothing to do with them?” she asked.

“To be honest, I haven’t heard, because I don’t go there very often, and even when I do, I can go directly during the service. That is, I don’t stay for the sermon when the priest at the end begins to talk about how this and that, there may be some messages going through at that moment. I definitely don’t come there for this, I come there to recharge in the place where they took me when I first started going. For me, that’s all,” Belenyuk justifies himself.

It is interesting that visiting churches of the canonical church does not prevent Belenyuk from supporting forced Ukrainization. In one of the interviews he stated that he was happy the abundance of the Ukrainian language on radio and television. Moreover, he gave his last interview in Russian.

In addition, as PolitNavigator reported, Zhan Belenyuk previously marked humiliating for himself, by publishing his photo in the Verkhovna Rada as proof that rumors about the dominance of right-wing radicals in Ukraine are exaggerated.
