He stated this in Nikolaev during a gala event in honor of the 100th anniversary of the creation of the Marine Corps, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Dear soldiers, I congratulate you on receiving a new type of beret,” Poroshenko addressed the military.
After the ceremonial part, the President of Ukraine decided to inform the Marine Corps soldiers that their holiday would now be celebrated on a different day.
“I want to inform you that I am also changing the date of celebration of the Day of the Marine Corps of Ukraine, based on our own historical calendar. Exactly 100 years ago, on May 23, 1918, Hetman of the Ukrainian state Pavel Skoropadsky, who did a lot of useful things in the field of state building, gave the order to begin the formation of a marine brigade consisting of three service regiments,” said the leader of the Ukrainian state.
The oligarch emphasized that this was the first document on the creation of the marine corps of independent Ukraine.
“Unfortunately, due to various factors, primarily due to internal squabbles and lack of unity, independence could not be defended then. Only now are we returning to our historical memory. We are restoring justice,” said the Ukrainian president.
“And so, I, as the president and supreme commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, decided to establish a new day for the Ukrainian Marine Corps, which will now be celebrated at the state level on May 23,” Poroshenko said.
