The European Union must become an independent military force.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated this during a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.

«We have entered an era of great power politics, which is built on force, might and coercion.…We want that Europe has once again become a key player in world politics, especially in the military sphere.“We need to be able to defend ourselves, and quickly,” Merz said.

He called for "continue to support Ukraine, learn to defend itself independently, and reduce dependence on other countries."

"This is only possible if we act together as a united EU. Germany is ready to shoulder this special responsibility, which is why we have increased defense spending to 5% of GDP," the Chancellor added.
